Use AOL For Free

Overview

America On-Line, a unit of Time-Warner, announced a major change to their business model in 2006. The service is going to an advertiser supported model where AOL attempts to generate revenue by displaying ads to subscribers. Current AOL customers can switch to the free service and stop paying for subscription fees.

Q: What Is The Change?

A: The AOL service formerly know as "Bring Your Own Access" is now free. AOL used to charge $15 per month to use their service with another Internet access method, such as DSL or cable modem. However current subscribers must agree to new terms of service to stop being billed this monthly charge.

Q: What If I Use AOL For Internet Access?

A: If you make no change to your account, the standard monthly rate applies. You can switch to the new terms and conditions of service for a lower rate.

Q: Is It Worth It To Switch?

A: In all cases, yes. Even with dial-up access, the new plan is only $10 per month, not $24. Also AOL is known to have one of the highest rates for high-speed Internet: switching to DSL from the phone company and using AOL's free email can save $10-20 each month.

Q: How Do I Switch?

A: If you are a current AOL subscriber, visit keyword Billing when logged in to the primary screen name. If you used to be an AOL subscriber and wish to retrieve your previous AOL email address, visit the following web site:

Q: I Switched Some Time Ago. Do I Have To Do Anything Else?

A: No. You should be set. But verify your bill rate has changed by visiting keyword Billing or looking at a credit card statement.
