Seems like it's impossible to watch a broadcast television program without seeing a Microsoft® Windows® 7 commercial. Perhaps that's because Windows Vista® was such a flop. Perhaps because computers have gotten better, cheaper, and faster; or perhaps because there has been real improvement, Windows 7 is actually a decent operating system and a worthy replacement for XP. In almost all cases, except one:
It is still possible, and actually easier, to buy a netbook with Windows XP Home Edition installed, however. Why? Because netbooks are far less powerful then normal laptops. True, netbooks are far less expensive and far lighter then other computers. But they also have less memory and slower processors, too.
There is a version of Windows 7 called Starter Edition that is specifically designed for netbooks. But this version has some interesting limitations, namely:
The first two limitations won't impact most netbook users because DVD and dual monitor hardware must be purchased separately. But not being able to change the background wallpaper? Or change the sounds? You've got to be kidding!
Our advice? Choose 7 Business if you need a domain logon, 7 Home Premium if you don't, and stick with XP Home for netbooks.
And if you're wondering if one should upgrade a computer to 7: not unless forced. There are at least two operating system upgrade costs: more memory to accommodate the always larger system. And the time and effort, which increases geometrically if there is an installation problem.
So we recommend keeping the installed OS on a computer unless an upgrade is absolutely necessary. And even then, seriously think about the purchase of a new system if the old one is over five years old.
