Starting with the 2006 version, we are formally recommending customers stop using any type of Symantec brand Norton computer security software. Why?
The software substantially slows down system performance.
The engineering design includes installation of a root kit, which itself is (in our judgment, at least) a higher security risk then regular software.
The redesigned alerts and pop-ups make the software truly annoying.
Recommendation? Use Grisoft AVG instead. Less then $40 buys two years of protection. So at $20 per year it's a bargain. AVG is fast: it loads, updates, and gets out of the way before Norton can figure out if it needs to update or not. And there is no root kit installation. For more information on AVG, call us or visit the Grisoft web site.
Two of our customers who migrated to a version of Intuit's QuickBooks 2006 have also experienced a product failure that required purchasing a paid support contract from Intuit before receiving the support necessary to get the product working again.
Or in other words, the QuickBooks web site does NOT have enough information to resolve broken serial number problems with the 2006 version. One can follow the directions on the web site exactly and the repair still will not work. The two impacted customers said Intuit's support was of good to very good quality but there were several UNDOCUMENTED steps taken during the telephone support session to fix the problem.
Have an @aol.com email address? Have Internet service through another provider, such as AT&T or Time Warner? AOL is now available to current and new subscribers free of charge.
AOL has been losing subscribers for the past few years as customers moved from dial-up towards higher speed Internet services. This impacted ad revenue, which is in part based on the number of people that see an ad. So AOL now allows people to use its software and services for free as long as the customer pays for an alternate Internet connection.
If you or someone you know is a current AOL subscriber with alternate means of connecting to the Internet, use the keyword Billing to stop paying montly charges to AOL.
If you are not a current AOL subscriber but want a free @aol.com email address, visit thier web site.
PS Two years ago AOL changed its email protocol so that it may be used with any conventional email tool, such as Outlook Express, Mac OS X Mail, or Thunderbird. Please call us if you would like to use an @aol.com email address in this manner.
